Lake Bunyonyi, the ‘place of many little birds’ is undoubtedly the most stunning lake in Uganda. Its contorted shore encircles twenty-nine islands, surrounded by steep terraced hillsides reminiscent of parts of Nepal. A magical place, especially with a morning mist rising off the calm water, it has replaced the Ssese Islands as the place for travelers to chill out on their way through Uganda. The Lake has a selection of beautifully remote and rural places to stay on distant islands, where you have only the birds for company. Best of all – unlike many lakes in East Africa – Bunyoni is Bilharzia, crocodile, and hippo free, so its crystal-clear waters are all in which yours to swim perfectly.

Itineraries

Day 1

Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park

We pick you up early in the morning at the airport in Entebbe or at your accommodation in Entebbe/Kampala and head immediately to Queen Elizabeth National Park. On the way, you will gain your first impressions of everyday life when passing by markets and herdsmen with their Ankole Longhorn cattle. In the evening you will enjoy the view of the Kazinga Channel from our accommodation with anticipation of the next day.
Accommodation: Mweya Safari Lodge
Meals: lunch and dinner
Drinks: water while driving, other drinks not included

Day 2

Game drive and boat cruise on Kazinga Channel

We start our game drive early in the morning. If temperatures are still low the animals are more active. There is a good chance of seeing lions, hyenas, and leopards. There is also the possibility of a walking safari where we may see chimpanzees (not habituated) and other species of monkeys. Additionally, we will enjoy a variety of bird life. In the afternoon we change perspective and join a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel. This natural channel connects Lake Edward and Lake George. It also hosts one of the world's largest hippo populations and a large number of Nile crocodiles. With rising temperatures, many animals come to the water and can watch them while they cool down.
Accommodation: Mweya Safari Lodge
Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Drinks: water while driving, other drinks not included

Day 3

Chimpanzee Tracking and drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Forest

This morning we start off on another fascinating experience, chimpanzee tracking of which about seventy of the animals are habituated. First, we hear the calls of the animals and the booming beating on tree trunks before we must leave again, but we will hopefully remember some magical moments. We then drive to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, where we stay overnight inside the park. On the way, you will enjoy the beautiful mountain landscapes of southwestern Uganda.
Accommodation: Wild Olives Lodge
Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Drinks: water while driving, other drinks not included

Day 4

Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Today we experience the absolute highlight of the trip when we meet the mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Together with Rangers we search for one of seven habituated gorilla families. Depending on their location this search may take more or less time. But no matter how long it takes, it is worth the effort. We can see the immense power of these animals, but also the calm and serenity of the adult animals as the youngsters playfully chase through the group. You have an hour to take photographs and record as many beautiful memories as possible. After this impressive experience we make our way to Lake Bunyonyi, one of the most beautiful lakes in Uganda.
Accommodation: Arcadia Cottages
Meals: breakfast, lunch or lunchbox, and dinner

Day 5

Around Lake Bunyonyi

Lake Bunyonyi is one of the most beautiful lakes in Uganda. We explore the lake by canoe and visit some of its twenty-nine islands. A visit to the Batwa in Karengerere, who originally inhabited the forests of the area, shows us a completely different world. As they still live in the mountains, we have a fantastic view of the lake from there. You will also see other beautiful places on the hike. We will finish the day with a visit to the orphans of Mwendo, who welcome us with singing and dancing. After these varied experiences, you will stay overnight on Kyahugye Island.
Accommodation: Lake Bunyonyi Eco Resort
Meals: breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Drinks: water while driving, other drinks not included
